Characteristics of Coaching

Here is what we believe are some of the main characteristics of coaching:

It is a trusting, respectful partnership between the coach and the person being coached.

It allows people to clarify and move towards their goals with the support and guidance of the coach.

It is result orientated and focuses on attaining and exceeding goals.

The coaching agenda comes from the client, and is unique - based on the client’s individual needs.

It believes that people are creative, imaginative, ingenious, inspired and inventive and are able to set goals and reach them.

It is performance focused, encouraging and helps individuals perform tasks to the best of their ability.

it is person-centred, in that the individuals being coached are seen to have the insights and solutions.

It involves ‘conversation’ rather than giving advice, discipline, or therapy.

It talks about obstacles and weaknesses but focuses on strengths and positive changes.

It assumes that life and people are integrated – and can’t be put into separate compartments.

It welcomes change and seeks to help others deal positively with change.

It is aimed at specific issues and areas, and can also be very general and far-reaching.

It focuses on improving performance and developing and enhancing individuals’ skills.

It is used to address a wide range of subjects, issues and areas.

It focuses on current and future performance, behaviour and actions, rather than dwelling on past events and failures.
