Coaching and Mentoring Schemes
We agree with Clutterbuck and Megginson in “Making Coaching Work: Creating a coaching culture” when they say:
The case for investing in a coaching culture is not the same for every organisation.
It is strongest in those organisations:
- that rely on the efficacy, loyalty and ingenuity of their people;
- that expect continuous, often disruptive change;
- which have leadership capable of and committed to performance improvement, starting with themselves.
If at least two of these criteria don't apply to your organisation, don't bother — you are unlikely to carry it through. You may be better to stick instead to piecemeal coaching interventions, where there is a specific, defined need and outcomes. On the other hand, there are many organisations for which all three criteria apply. To these we say, can you afford not to move as far as you can towards a coaching culture?
