Forms of Coaching

There are two basic forms of coaching:

The most powerful form of coaching is in a face to face context. Distance coaching is facilitated by technology using telephone (tele-coaching) or the inter net (e-coaching and e-mail coaching). Many people now use the internet instead of telephone networks, so tele-coaching and e-coaching are merging.

Forms of Coaching in detail

The selection of a specific form of coaching is based on the needs and preferences of the client within the range of services available. Distance coaching supplements face-to-face coaching by providing increased access to coaching on the basis of necessity or convenience. Barriers, such as being a long distance from coaching services, geographic separation of a group or couple, or limited physical mobility as a result of having a disability, can make it necessary to provide coaching at a distance. Options, such as scheduling coaching sessions outside of traditional service delivery hours or delivering coaching services at a place of residence or employment, can make it more convenient to provide coaching at a distance.

Tele-coaching involves synchronous distance interaction among coach and clients using one-to-one or conferencing features of the telephone or internet to communicate.

Forms of coaching can therefore differ with respect to:

· The Participants. Coaching participants can be individuals, or groups of two or more.

· The Delivery location. The location for coaching delivery can be face-to-face or at a distance with the assistance of technology.

· The Communication medium. The communication medium for coaching can be what is read from text, what is heard from audio, or what is seen and heard in person or from video.

· The interaction process.  The interaction process for coaching can be synchronous or asynchronous. Synchronous interaction occurs with little or no gap in time between the responses of the coach and the client. Asynchronous interaction occurs with a gap in time between the responses of the coach and the client.
