Tip 6 - How to lead yourself to happiness and success

Tips
Resources & Questionnaires.

In the previous Tools and Tips newsletter (see Tip 5) we looked at a model that separates your resources into various categories that could be called an ‘inner team’ and you may not have realised what a vast array of resources you have. So how can you manage all your resources to achieve happiness and success?

Here’s a way to think about how to get the best from yourself.

It is now considered that a coaching style of management is best practice, see for example: Coaching employees by Rebecca Martin.

How does this apply to your inner team?

If you want to be more successful and happier this means a change has to take place. It is said that "Coaching is the only style where it is possible to get some traction on helping people change. Sometimes we have to make a quick, urgent decision but we have to prepare the organisation for that and that's where coaching comes into it.” See above link. So by applying this to your inner team it makes sense to develop an inner coach.

Manager, conductor, co-ordinator (Your inner coach)

Think of your inner team as an orchestra of skilled musicians – each playing a different instrument. It’s the conductor who gets the best out of everyone as they play the same tune. You could also think of your goals and plans as the score of the music that your orchestra is playing – so that everyone is playing the same tune. Chances are, in your life, you have achieved similar goals before, maybe in a different context. So you can use your inner coach/conductor to help you on your way and to co-ordinate all your efforts.

If whatever you are trying to do is totally new to you, it’s likely someone else has succeeded at something similar or knows something you don't. So there is no need to reinvent the wheel. Even Olympic athletes and virtuoso musicians – the best in the world at what they do – have coaches. By using your inner coach to find someone with the appropriate expertise, you can ensure every section of your orchestra is in tune before you start and go on to achieve what you want more quickly and easily.

What else can your inner coach help with? Perhaps looking at the bigger picture: use your inner coach to create a support system. One of the most important parts of our surroundings is the people in it. Find people who know about your goals and believe in you – a cheering section or appreciative audience. Ideally you'll want to include people who are working toward the same or a similar goal. This isn't about creating competition but support. You want to have people in your corner who will remember why your goals are important to you on those dark days when you can't. You want a support system who believes in your ability to succeed and will remind you of that when you need it the most. Remember that many of us do better when we are accountable to someone else. Telling someone else what you have committed to do and knowing that they will check in on you and ask you how it went is a powerful motivator.

One of the best ways to develop an inner coach is to experience coaching for your self. Click here to arrange an introductory session.
