Every August the shops promote ‘Back to School’ items like uniforms and stationery, which means the holidays will soon be over. Holidays are a time for rest and relaxation, and give you time away from your immediate current situation to take an overview of your circumstances.

Here are some guidelines to a process that will help. Start by choosing an area of you life, eg home, family, work-life. Then make a list of everything that is important to you in that area, this will give you a list of values (see Tip 11).

Next, score each value out of ten, according to how satisfied you are with its delivery in your current situation. Use 10 for ‘extremely satisfied’ and 1 for ‘not satisfied at all’.

Then, write down what a level 10 satisfaction would feel like for each of these values. This is a similar type of visualisation exercise that top athletes use when mentally preparing for competition. They imagine the perfect race, throw, jump or other outcome. Imagining what you want prepares the mind and body to recognise it when it comes along.

The last part of this process is to write down three tasks for each value that define what you could do to take you closer to scoring 10. Set yourself a date by which you will have achieved them. For example you may want to book a review meeting with your staff or boss by the end of the month.

Doing this exercise will help you identify what you need to focus on to create more satisfaction in your life and work.

A coach can help you with this process and in many other ways.
