John Grinder, one of the originators of NLP, found that highly successful people shared an ability to perceive themselves from a variety of standpoints. He identified three perceptual positions:
1. The Congruent Self - First position
2. In Another’s Shoes - Second position
3. Self Coach - Third position
o First position – The Congruent Self
Person is fully committed to the achievement of his/her objectives.
o Second position – In Another’s Shoes
Person sees him/herself through another’s eyes, giving a fuller
understanding of their own behaviour and the response of others. It
provides an insight, unavailable through words, into the possible needs
of the other person.
o Third position – Self Coach
Like a ‘fly on the wall’, able to see and hear himself and others and how
they interact.
Many people in NLP have added a Fourth position: a perspective from the system in which you are acting. It could be the business in which you work or your family or community. From this perspective you get the chance of taking an ecological viewpoint – to understand what could be your impact on the wider system.
It’s possible to get even more adventurous. Find your inner Eagle, and soar above these four positions to a Meta (Greek word meaning above or outside of) position. Take yourself right out of the four perspective viewpoints. Get high enough up there to disconnect completely. Then think to yourself: what am I seeing; what am I hearing; what am I feeling; and what can I communicate back to these four elements that will enhance understanding and improve the way they are relating to each other?
And you know it’s amazing the things that can happen when you get a different perspective on things!
A coach can help you develop multiple perception skills and in many other ways.
