Have you ever wanted to be absolutely confident in certain situations in which you were feeling unsure? Would it be empowering for you to get into a state of being totally motivated instead of feeling lethargic? Or how about changing the fear of going on stage to feeling enthusiastic and relaxed, when facing an audience? How much would it change the results?

It’s well known now that our physiology affects our mood and visa versa: a principle well known to motivational speakers, who often rely on physiology, ie positive posture, breathing, head position, gestures etc to create states of excellence and a feeling of power and of success.

So when your mother told you to sit up straight, she was probably right!

If you want to feel confident, all you have to do is to adopt the total physiology of confidence. If you want to feel motivated, adopt the physiology of motivation.

Confidence, motivation and excitement are emotional states that you have experienced in the past. You can access these states from a past situation, making those same resources available to you when you want them. All you have to do is reproduce or ‘model’ the exact same physiology you had when you experienced it previously.

If you decide to take on a challenge and want to put yourself into an absolutely ‘confident’ state in order to perform at your peak, here are 6 steps to follow:

Six Steps to Modelling Your Physiology of Excellence

Think of a time in the past when you felt totally ‘confident’.

  1. Stand the way you would stand if you felt totally ‘confident’.
  2. Breathe the way you would breathe if you felt totally ‘confident’.
  3. Have the facial expression, focus in your eyes when you felt totally ‘confident’.
  4. Gesture the way you would if you felt totally ‘confident’.
  5. Say what you would say to yourself if you felt totally ‘confident’, making sure you use the same tone, pitch and volume.

By modelling exactly the same physiology your body had previously, you will be able to feel confidence surging through your body, preparing you to take on the challenge!

The more exact you model your physiology, the better the result. These are some of the areas to pay attention to:

This will work for any emotion or resource, eg pleasure, ease, cheerfulness, enthusiasm, clarity or caring.

A coach can help you refine and improve your modelling skills and in many other ways.
