Creativity Tip 24 – Creativity versus Critical Thinking

Much of the thinking done in formal education emphasises the skills of analysis: following or creating a logical argument, working out the answer, understanding assertions, eliminating the incorrect paths and focusing on the correct one. However, creative thinking focuses on exploring ideas, generating possibilities, looking for many right answers rather than just one.

In an activity such as problem solving, both kinds of thinking are important. First, we analyse the problem; then we can generate many possible solutions; next we can choose and implement the solution that seems best; and finally, we evaluate the effectiveness of the solution.

This process shows the alternation between the two kinds of thinking, critical and creative. In problem solving, both kinds of thinking operate together and are not independent of each other.

Creativity coaching can help with your thinking, so you can find more connections to successful ways of achieving your goals and dealing with your challenges.
